Google Vids is a game-changing new document format within your Google Drive that finally brings powerful, yet simple, video editing capabilities directly to your browser. For growing businesses, this means you can instantly leverage existing video assets or quickly create engaging new content without needing complicated third-party software. This new feature allows you to take any video stored in your Google Drive, turn it into a Google Vid, and immediately begin editing, making the process of content creation significantly more efficient [01:17].

Google Vids functions as a hybrid tool, blending the functionality of a presentation creator with a video editor [00:27]. Instead of a traditional timeline, you work on a “storyboard” [00:57], making it intuitive for anyone familiar with Google Slides. It enables you to weave together pre-recorded footage, voiceovers, and AI-generated elements into a cohesive, fully rendered video [01:05].

Turning Existing Videos into Google Vids

The core new feature is the ability to instantly open an existing video from your Google Drive using the “Open with Google Vids” option [01:30]. Once inside the editor, you can manipulate your video by adding new scenes, rearranging clips on the storyboard, and inserting new content wherever necessary [01:50]. This allows you to quickly update or augment existing footage—for instance, by adding a new introduction to a training video that was previously missing one.

Building Dynamic Content with AI Avatars

A major advantage of using Google Vids is the seamless integration of generative AI tools. When you add a new scene, you can choose to insert an AI avatar to deliver a script, which you can draft yourself or even generate using Gemini [02:04]. This enables small business owners to create professional, camera-ready content without having to be on camera themselves.

Editing by Transcript: A Game-Changer

One of the most clever and impactful features of Google Vids is the ability to edit your video by transcript [03:36]. Similar to specialized video editing tools, Google Vids generates a transcript of your video. You can then simply edit the text—changing words or deleting sentences—and the video editor automatically trims the corresponding footage in the background [03:49]. This removes the need for technical cutting and splicing, drastically simplifying the editing process and saving growing businesses valuable time.

Converting Images to Video with V3

Finally, Google Vids is constantly evolving its AI capabilities. You can convert static images into dynamic video content using V3, animating the image based on a text prompt [04:15]. This is just one more way Google Vids helps entrepreneurs and teams create compelling visual content dynamically, solidifying its place as a very cool and interesting tool in the Google Workspace suite.

You can now edit Google Drive videos in the browser using Google Vids. I’ve been talking a lot about Google Vids because it’s an exciting new tool. I haven’t used it heaps myself like for my day-to-day work, but I really want to use it and find ways to use it. I guess we’ll probably be using it for presentations somehow, although I usually like to present live rather than creating pre-recorded stuff. Google Vids is kind of a new file format inside your Google Drive. I’ve created some other videos on it as well, but it’s kind of like halfway between recording a video or a voice over and making a presentation from scratch. It lets you blend the two together, so a mix of either pre-recorded videos or AI avatar generated videos or just AI generated videos in general. So there might be like pictures or animals, or you can see here a can of soft drink, whatever you want, and you build them on a timeline, or Google would call it a storyboard. From there, you can piece together what becomes a fully finished rendered video. It’s effectively a new kind of document file format, and Google’s calling it Google Vids, available right now in your Google Drive. Go and check it out.

What Google is giving you the ability to do now is take any video inside your Google Drive and turn it into a Google Vid, which is pretty interesting. I have a video here in my Google Drive, and I can click “Open with Google Vids.” Hopefully, this is going to give me an editor where I can edit the video. Say I had a team member shoot me a contract, but they needed an introduction for this. I’m going to add a new scene and I can grab that scene and drag it up to the front, just like a video editor. In the new scene, let’s say I want to add in probably an AI avatar. Here’s something really exciting I just found in Google Workspace, that’s going to be our intro. I write the script there, and of course, I could use Gemini to generate that script if I wanted to, and then I choose the avatar. At this point, I can’t yet choose myself as an avatar, I’m sure Google are working on that, but I’m going to find someone who looks as close to the desired person as possible. I’m going to go for this nerdy looking dude here. When you do a preview, the first thing that happens is you’re going to get a kind of low-quality rendering without the lips being perfect. I’m going to go generate, and that should insert that into this scene here. So it’s first going to give me my scene on the left-hand side here, and then it’s going to go into the main video, but that gives you a bit of an idea of what this tool does.

Google Vids is effectively a storyboard video and presentation creator, letting you do a hybrid of both. Very cool tool. When you hit play, you get the new introduction and then the existing footage. I don’t hate that, that’s pretty good. That’s Google Vids. Check it out. The new feature there is that I can take a video straight from my Google Drive, hit the button, and end up inside of Google Vids. I like that very cool feature. You can edit videos by transcript inside of Google Vids, and this is a very, very clever feature. This is basically what another really cool tool called Descript does. It’s a video editor, and it lets you edit videos just from the transcript of the video, and it does all the editing in the background for you. You just need to change the words, and it does it all for you. You can now do an edit just from the transcript, which is pretty cool. When you edit, it’s going to automatically trim the video for you, which is pretty impressive. Next up, convert images to video with V3 in Google Vids. Plenty of people have been playing with this and posting memes and stuff online, so taking a static image and then turning it into a video. I have not yet used this one myself. We use a text prompt to animate the image, which is pretty cool. It’s getting very, very, very interesting all the things you can generate now dynamically using Gemini. If you liked this video, we’ve got plenty more on the channel covering this topic and much, much more.
