How does Chromecast work? One just simply plug it into a TV or monitor and once configured, you can start streaming from your mobile devices. It is a handy device that can be used to display content from applications like Youtube, Netflix, and Spotify. You can also use it in meeting rooms to mirror your screen for presentations. Streaming is now seamless and wireless!

G'day there. Pete Moriarty here with a question from someone in our community, when and why would I consider a Google Chromecast?

So a Google Chromecast connects into your TV, and that's what I'm actually using in the TV sitting right behind me, and it's a streaming device. If you're in the Apple ecosystem, if you've got an iPhone right now and you've got an Apple TV, you would know that you can share from your phone to the TV and it kind of mirrors what's on your screen or you can play audio or video or whatever on the TV.

This is kind of like the Google equivalent, but like with everything Google, it's a bit more friendly for cross-platform. Now, what that means is, if you're on an Android device or on an iOS device, you can actually stream content from most apps these days straight down into the Chromecast and therefore onto your TV.

So what's that useful for? Well, that might be useful if you're in a boardroom or a meeting room and you've just got a TV sitting there, and you plug in a Chromecast, and you can share what's on your computer up onto the boardroom TV without having to bother with cables. It just uses your wifi connection. That's pretty handy.

Secondly, you might want to use it in your personal life, at home. You can stream from the Netflix app or from the Spotify app, or from the YouTube app, and even with YouTube, you can queue up videos. So if you've got a TV in a lounge room, for example, and you've got multiple family members, they can each queue up videos on YouTube to play onto the Chromecast. That's pretty handy.

Thirdly, there's even Chromecast Audio, so you can plug a Chromecast device into a sound system, into a stereo for example, and you can do not only streaming to one stereo but even multi-room audio as well. So quite a few cool things there.

The Chromecast Audio is around 50 bucks, that's Australian. A basic Chromecast for your TV, the HDMI one, is also about 50 bucks. If you've got a 4K TV and you want to use it for something like Netflix, then I would recommend the Chromecast Ultra, and that's around $100. The Chromecast Ultra lets you do 4K streaming and 4K streaming straight from Netflix as well.

So, handy little device, great to have one in the office, great to have one at home as well. If you haven't already got one, you can pick them up in any decent retailer and you can pick them up online, on Amazon or eBay, as well. Rock and roll.
