G’day there, Peter Moriarty here. Today I’m answering a question for Rebecca, getting teams over to G Suite and getting teams excited about the switch to G Suite. Now Rebecca asks, “I just started using Google Docs…” Well, Rebecca just started using Google Docs. She started using them in G Suite, and she wants to roll it out to the rest of her team. But her team are used to Microsoft, so what does she do?

And that’s a great question. Honestly, with taking care of literally over a thousand businesses on their journey from switching from wherever they are right now, whether it’s Apple or Microsoft into the Google ecosystem, we see this literally every day. People have to go through change to take on the Google ecosystem, and the Google ethos and sometimes change is hard. We’re very respectful of that, that if you are a business leader and you’re introducing a change to your team, that can be pretty challenging. You can be faced with resistance, you may even questioned the change yourself. Now there’s a number of steps for change to be successful.

I think the most important step to start with when you’re communicating that change is, what’s the why? So really being good at communicating that, why, to your team. Why are we making this change? Well we’re looking for better collaboration, or we’re looking for better innovation in the business, or we want to reduce costs. Maybe you like the simplicity of working in the Google ecosystem. So share that with the team and think about, “Well what’s in it for them?” So if you have team members, what’s in it for them? Well maybe better productivity in their job, maybe they’ll be more efficient, maybe they’ll be less stressed, maybe they’ll have better communication with you when you’re out of the office. All those are benefits to your team members, of you rolling out G Suite. So start with communicating the why.

And then down to the more kind of practical side of things when experiencing, or when needing to go through change, sometimes it’s just a matter of being shown. If you’ve ever switched from maybe a PC over to a Mac, or if you remember switching from MYOB over to Xero, or maybe you switched from a non cloud application to a cloud application for your business management, you probably would have gone through a change process yourself. And that change is definitely scary if you remember that. But if you also try and remember that moment where you were just shown a few new things, that then made the experience really comfortable. And once you’ve kind of increased your competency, you’re then going to increase your confidence. And so try and find those moments where you can show your team, lead the way, show them something new, show them something that’s going to increase their competency, which will therefore increase their confidence.

And how we do that, when we implement G Suite for a customer is, we’ve got an online training program. We put all the staff, and all the businesses that we migrate through that training program. But all that really covers is, how to use the basics of a Google Doc. Okay, this is live updating, this is version control, you never have to use the save button again. And then we might show them some cool things inside of Gmail. Here’s how you can search for anything you’ve ever emailed back or forward, and find it instantly without having to dig through PST files or historical folders of emails. Showing someone a few cool little neat tricks that Google does really, really great that, Microsoft really just can’t match, is often the thing that gets somebody across the line.

So don’t worry about the negative Nellies, or the dinosaurs who don’t want to change. Show them a few cool things, lead the way and I’m sure that you will get things across the line. Of course, if you need any help with your migration to G Suite, get in touch with our team, head along itgenius.com, or you can find us on Facebook and YouTube.
