Q: What are the key steps to solving this problem? A: 1. Understand that Gemini is currently building functions like “move file to folder” and “create new folder” via text command. 2. Recognize that these text commands are a precursor to a voice-enabled interface. 3. Look forward to the ability to simply speak commands to Google Drive, such as “Move this file to the marketing folder.” 4. Apply the same natural language concept to other Workspace apps, such as using voice commands to write and edit emails in Gmail.

Google is rolling out an interesting update that allows small business owners to execute basic organizational tasks—such as moving files and creating folders—using Gemini AI directly in Google Drive [00:00]. While the current feature, which allows you to type commands to move a file or create a document, may not seem immediately faster than a quick right-click, this development is a critical step toward the future of how entrepreneurs will interact with their documents and data.
The Real Goal: Voice-Activated IT Support
The true potential of this feature lies in its progression toward natural language and voice commands. Google is building the infrastructure to allow users to simply talk to their Google Drive [01:46]. Imagine being able to say, “Move this quarter’s financial reports to the ‘Archived 2025’ folder,” or “Create a new document for the Q4 marketing plan,” and have Gemini execute the command instantly.
Google already has technology that allows users to share their screen with Gemini, enabling a live, contextual conversation about what’s visible on their computer [01:10]. It is highly likely that soon, a small button will appear inside Google Workspace that says “Talk to Gemini,” allowing you to perform these operations using your voice alone [01:29]. This means your file management will transition from a manual clicking process to an effortless, conversational interaction.
Beyond Drive: A Conversational Workspace
This organizational feature in Drive mirrors a broader trend across Google Workspace. We are rapidly approaching a time when you can interact with all your documents and applications using natural language. This future will bring the seamless interaction once only dreamed of:
- Speaking to Spreadsheets: The ability to verbally ask your Google Sheets for complex data analysis, such as “Show me the average of column B,” is becoming a reality [02:07].
- Dictating and Editing Emails in Gmail: Instead of dictating an email and then manually editing it, you will be able to tell Gemini, “Reply to this email,” have it draft a response, and then simply say, “Make the tone a bit more casual,” to instantly adjust the entire composition [02:49].
For growing businesses, this shift to a conversational, AI-driven interface is a massive win for productivity. It transforms the computer from a manual tool into an active, intelligent assistant, helping entrepreneurs and teams to scale effectively by automating basic, repetitive organizational tasks.

Using Gemini in Google Drive to execute basic organizational tasks. This is an interesting update. Gemini are now letting you move files, create folders, I assume like rename things, all using Gemini. It gives you an idea of the different functions here: move file to folder, move files to folder, create a new folder, create a new Doc, Sheet or Slide. Honestly, I don’t think this is much faster than right-click and create file. Or if you want to open up a new Google Doc, you can go to a new browser tab and literally type in doc.new or sheet.new or slides.new and you’re going to get a new document popping up for you there.
So why is Google building this? Hmm, let’s think ahead a little bit, shall we? I think Google are pretty quickly going to move to just allowing you to use voice to talk to Google Drive. They already have a pretty amazing feature, which I demoed in the video on my channel on Google AI Studio, which allows you to share your screen into Gemini and live have a conversation with Gemini about what’s on your computer screen. So think about it like a mentor or a tutor or an IT help person sitting over your shoulder, but it’s Google Gemini. I would not be surprised if soon Google will just have a little button there, “Talk to Gemini,” which lives right here inside of Workspace, and it allows you to do these kinds of operations. Right now it’s faster to just do it with a button click. I don’t think I would type out, “Hey, could you please move this file to this folder?” Yeah, that seems like a way slower thing of doing things, but you can see where this is going. This is going to be just our ability to talk to it.
I called this nearly 10 years ago when Google brought out their insights button in the bottom right-hand corner of Slides, remember that button there called insights? I don’t know if it’s still there anymore, but you could click insights and it would pop up and suggest a graph, and eventually it would let you start asking questions of your data in natural language, “Show me the average of column B,” and it would automatically do that for you. I started calling it, this is about 10 years ago, I said, “One day you’ll be able to just talk to your spreadsheet and all these things are just going to automatically happen.” And then Google did nothing for nearly a decade. Google did nothing, and only when Chat GBT came out did Google realize, “Oh crap, we’re behind on launching our AI features.” They had all this technology a long time ago, and they were behind at launching it for whatever reason, they were slow. Here we are, they’re finally catching up, but I think we’re very close to a day where you can just talk to your spreadsheets, talk to your Google Drive, talk to the rest of the Google stuff. And I would love a reality where in my Gmail, instead of dictating things to my PA, I can go ahead and say, “Hey Gmail, reply,” and say something along the lines of blah blah blah, and it’ll type out a response, and I can say, “Oh, I don’t like that. Can you make the tone a bit casual or a bit different?” and see it happen a different way. If you liked this video, we’ve got plenty more on the channel covering this topic and much, much more.
